Ahh! Thank goodness the backfiring is normal! I just bought an '86 last week with only 14k miles on it for $1800 and I'm very very happy with my purchase. This black beauty is hot! I was concerned about the backfiring, but after reading this site and all the tips on how to minimize it, I'm very relieved. I like the comment about how it's "farting". Or that it's just a sigh of relief. Hilarious!
